Abstract Triple oxygen isotope (δ17O and δ18O) values of high- low-temperature altered oceanic crust products basalt alteration experiments were measured to better constrain ocean compositions in deep time. The data define an array δ18O Δ′17O (Δ′17O=δ′17O − λRL × δ′18O + γ) from mantle toward 1‰ −0.01‰, respectively, with a λ ~0.523. used construct model for estimating δ18O-Δ′17O the ancient oceans if continental weathering flux (FCW) and/or hydrothermal (FHT) changed through A maximum lowering 7‰ 4‰, is achieved most extreme cases. value cannot be raised by more than 1.1‰. Rouxel et al. (Reports, 18 February 2005, p. 1088) argued that changes in the iron isotopic composition of sedimentary sulfides reflect changes in the oxidation state of the atmosphere-ocean system between 2.3 and 1.8 million years ago.
